Why you must check carrier licences

Under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, every business transferring waste must verify that the carrier holds a valid waste carrier registration. Using an unregistered carrier is a criminal offence with fines up to £5,000.

Upper tier vs lower tier registration

Upper tier registrations cost £154, last 3 years, and are required for businesses whose main activity involves transporting waste. Lower tier registrations are free, last indefinitely, and cover businesses carrying only their own waste.

Your commercial waste contractor should hold an upper tier registration. Check that it hasn't expired.
